John Magnan Studio
Although it's been over 18 months since I last graced your inbox, I've done a lot, and I'm still doing a lot, so I'll get right to the news ...
After the intense work of creating and exhibiting Thor's Hammer, I took a break from the heavy stuff. Since it was spring, I thought of garden tools. Shown here, left to right, are Mayflower Shovel, Garden Fork and Day Lily Spade.
Learning from Martin Puryear
I've always admired the work of wood sculptor Martin Puryear. His ability to deliver a message without being overtly "in your face" has always left me in wonder. I decided to give it a try. Drawing from Puryear's work, I created these three pieces. I'm pretty happy with the result, but feel I have a long way to go. The pieces are A Chain for Martin Puryear (look up his Ladder for Booker T. Washington), Shackle, and Link.
Work in Progress
The Cigar Box Series
Stashed in a corner of my studio were a few wood cigar boxes, given to me many years ago, awaiting their time to "become something." I always thought they could be made into something artsy, but frankly was a little intimidated. Finally I decided to wade in and just start playing around with these things and see what comes of it. Here's the work in progress. And yes, I'm trying to keep chasing the footsteps of Martin Puryear.
