Chains are powerful symbols, projecting both positive and negative impressions. In this case I was thinking of the familial bond, particularly that between parent and offspring. Parenting is a tie for life, whether times are good or bad. It is a link shackled to all of us at birth.
This chain is carved from one log, shown below just before it was milled. The log was 17 feet long, but as the links were carved apart the chain lengthened to 20 feet. The shackle, in the bottom photo, was created separately.
