Hope: a mobile of sails
2007

Permanent Installation, St. Luke's Hospital, New Bedford, Massachusetts
My inspiration for this large mobile was the realization that people enter hospitals with an expectation that something will get better. They enter with hope. My implementing concept is homage to the history of sailing in this historic whaling city. The mobile spans 24 feet, uses brass rods of various diameters, brass wire for suspension, and thin carved wood for the sails themselves. The detail below is a close-up of the whaling bark, one of six sailing vessels represented.
