Inner Strength

2011

I was invited by Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care to create a permanent sculpture for their new outpatient treatment facility in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. I chose to represent the strength cancer survivors find within themselves every day through a yoga form. Standing in the "tree" position, the figure will hold a pose of strength and balance, resources drawn upon by those facing the challenge of cancer and its treatment.

Inner Strength will stand in a bay window, overlooking a terrace garden and trees beyond. I chose the tree pose, and its window location, to be compatible with that view, and the architectural approach to the center itself, which complements its natural surroundings. It is my desire that viewing this sculpture will promote inner strength, health and well-being in the cancer survivors, family, friends, and loved ones that come to Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care for treatment.
